Willamette University Salem, Oregon Junior Class Song . . . x27;HERE AT FRESHMAN GLEE quot; Here we are at Freshman Glee; We won x27;t forget to smile. A great tradition we agree, And surely worth its smile. We make our bets and hope to win; We strive for Glee x27;s renown, And bet that Glee would jolly-well change If sung in Londontowne. Repeat No. 1 in madrigal style. As Johann Strauss in waltz-time wrote, We sing this song today. With courtly curtsey we x27;ll begin The stately Viennese way. Repeat No. 1 in waltz style. In New Orleans while trumpets blow On Basin Street somewhere; The mood we x27;ll sing in next for you With blues will fill the air. Repeat No. 1 in blues style. In lands far from Willamette x27;s shores We x27;ve tried to let you see How songs would be rearranged For their own Freshman Glee. U. x27; I quot; Here at Willamette U. we have a situation uncommon to other college campuses. This situation is the proximity of the railroad tracks resulting in annoying, and often amusing situations which we would like to share with you. quot; x Our Prof, began to lecture of Socrates and such, But of those dear philosophers we cannot tell you much. For as we gained some interest and started a debate, We could not hear each other, x27;cause there came another freight. CHORUS: Hear the music of the railings rumbling Clickity-Clack. Destination W. U. Drumming out the rhythm as the train rolls down the track. Destination W. U. There it goes Round the bend Round the bend Then straight again Ch ch ch ch ch ch My girl and I went out one night to pitch a little woo. We kissed beside the Millstream, I whispered, quot;I love you. quot; Continued She smiled and seemed so happy, I think she felt the same. I x27;ll never know for certain there came the 12th street train. CHORUS: At nine one night three girls stepped out to walk down Lebold x27;s way. They sipped their cokes, then payed the bill; No longer could they stay. At five til ten they started back, reached the track at 12th and State, The bar went down, the bell rang out, they knew then they x27;d be late. CHORUS: Another story they do tell about Willamette U., Of boys who hope to Portland go aboard the 5:02. It seemed there were some hapless boys who hopped the Portland train. Which took them more than 50 miles and on to Portland, Maine. DR. DANIEL SCHULZE Freshman Glee Freshman Glee originated in 1908 when three ingenious freshmen, Jimmie Oaks, quot;Brick quot; Harrison, and R. V. Ellis of the class of 1912, challenged the other classes to a song competition. The words and music were to be original, and all class members were to participate in the contest in the chapel of Waller Hall. There, the proud freshmen received the first quot;College Glee quot; victory banner. In 1911, Glee moved to the First Methodist Church, then, two years later to the Salem Armory, and, finally in 1923, to the newly completed Willamette gym. In the early Glees, classes simply walked in, rendered their songs, and walked out again. Then, with increased class participation and publicity, the programs grew more elaborate. Marching, today an integral fixture, was added in 1912. Later, to facilitate judging, all the classes adopted common themes. Fortieth Glee in 1948, saw the quot;whiskerino quot; contest return with the traditional dark and white glee uniform. Freshman Glee has great milestones. In 1933, the freshmen won Silver Glee. In 1938, quot;Life quot;, by publishing an article on Glee, brought it to national attention. In Golden Glee, in 1958, the seniors staged their third victory in four years. Today is Glee x27;s fifty-fifth birthday. Hours of planning, preparation, and practice have gone into this evening x27;s program. The long awaited moment approaches for each class to unveil the fruits of its ingenuity and toil. Welcome to NOVELTY. THE CLASS OF x27;66 Dedicates . . . . . . The 1963 Freshman Glee to Dr. Robert M. Gatke who has been either student or professor on this campus since 1914. During his long stay at Willamette, he worked to beautify the campus with his landscaping. He wrote quot; The Chronicles of Willamette quot;, an historical account of the development of Willamette University. Once a professor of history and political science, he now holds a position of Professor Emeritus.
