The 125th Graduating Class Presents . The 56th Annua FRESHMAN GLEE MARCH 14, 1964 8:00 P.M. WILLAMETTE UNIVERSITY Salem, Oregon INTRODUCTION . . . Welcome to the 56th annual FRESHMAN GLEE at Willamette . . . This highly competitive tradition, unique only to this university, is the most outstanding and memorable event of the year. The dedicated work and practice preceding Glee, the anxious competition of Glee night, and the settlement of Glee bets on Blue Monday, establish Freshman Glee as a function un- equaled in spirit and enthusiasm. quot;Serenade quot;, the theme for this year x27;s program, has kindled the imagination and talent of students to create the beautiful presentations you witness this evening. It is my sincere hope that the 1964 Freshman Glee will be a treasured and long remembered experience for everyone here tonight. LARRY HILLHOUSE Freshman Glee Manager Judges . The class of 1967 is honored to dedicate Freshman Glee, 1964, to a person who has contributed immeasurably to this field of music; Dean Melvin H. Geist of the College of Music. After twenty-five faithful years of service and guidance to an ever-enlarging, ever-improving school of music, Dean Geist will retire in June. With the dedication of 1964 Freshman Glee goes our warmest wishes for happiness and continued success wherever he may be. TDwgnatH . . . Class Parodies Freshman Class President x27;s Report.. . DR. DANIEL SCHULZE Senitn Icl46 Sony quot; The Gift of Love quot; I stand alone with no course of my own, Left to drift in the night like a leaf raised by wind in flight. And as I fly in the wind toward the sky, There x27;s no light from a star as a sign from Love x27;s God afar. Glouds of black begin to part; Venus shows her face. She calms the wind, the beating rain with her grace. She takes my heart and holds it fast; My loneliness is gone. I bow on bended knee and sing Love x27;s song. With soul so pure and heart so true, Beauty and loveliness beyond compare, Faithful I x27;ll be to my beloved. My heart nevermore will need to care. Venus brought love to me; Now Spring will ever be. Love gives me her hand and we walk on our way to happiness, joy, our new life together; My life and my love are now here to stay. Song Leader: Dave Beier Formation Leader: Don Lorenzin Words: Rosalie Whitney/ John Vaagen Music: Ivona Randall, Dave Beier fcuUwt l*te gt; Sony quot;Vision of My Love quot; Voices soft in the pale moonlight, Haunt my dreams thru the lonely night. Ever wondering where can you be, Is there love for me? Must you taunt my heart from afar? Must I always wish for a star? Can you be what I x27;m dreaming of, Vision of my love. As the bud reveals the rose, Petals kissed by the sun. So our love would also grow, Two hearts blending as one. Can x27;t you see we x27;ve a life to live, Untold treasures of love to give, Or must it fade and merely become, One more song unsung? Melancholy melodies, Oh, what magic they do. I know that you x27;d come to me, If they x27;d whisper to you. Voices soft in the lonely night, Linger on in the morning light. Each one drifting on to the sky, Tells my love goodbye. Words and Music: Jeff Heatherington, Barbara Davis, Sharon Brown, Sue Meeker, Gary Wyatt, Paul Wynn Song Leader: Jeff Heatherington Formation Leader: Ron Nelson Sofe amp;omtne (Ziate, Sony, quot;To Liberty quot; Introduction: We serenade our love to you, While still our vigil goes on. You shelter land and people you love By watching them safely x27;til dawn. You see the stars that wink in the sky; You watch the moon that floats slowly by This is America you love; This is our serenade to you. You beckon dawn with lifted arm, Land waking fresh and warm. Chorus: In brilliant light that beams o x27;er the ocean, Your glory shines in far distant blue To guide man x27;s heart in a song of devotion. Fair Liberty we sing to you. Your flaxen hair blows in prairie fields Where grain grows rich and strong; Wide sweeping plains are carressed by the shadows; Winds carry strains of a song. Clear mountain lakes brightly shine in your eyes; Mirror the eagle x27;s swift golden wing; In spirit true, ever free, ever faithful, Grateful allegiance we bring. Finale: Your flowing robes drapes mountain with snow; Your flaming torch reflects sunset x27;s glow; Ocean, wide plains, and mountains so free, Are crowned by our serenade to thee Words: Jane Bonnington, Darelyn Huson, Ward Nelson Music: John Putnam, Darelyn Huson, Karen Reppun Song Leader: Karen Reppun Formation Leader: Mary Dorsch quot;In Serenade11 I x27;m waiting for a serenade To draw my tender thoughts from me; Sounds deep within my heart To intertwine with your words. So find me waiting here for you, My heart x27;s a scroll of faith and hope For you to gently write your love song on And make yours alone . . . I x27;m waiting for a melody, To sweetly serenade my soul And touch the wealth it holds . . . Release my song to soar. Now music floating, comes to us, This is our serenade, The melody is sweet That joins us now in song. A song we sing unknowingly Each minute of the day, One constant serenade That flows from us . . . Miss Mildred Christenson ... for her much appreciated assistance in preventing certain members of the Freshman class from taking unscheduled quot;vacations quot; during the days preceeding the Challenge Assembly, resulting in failure for the upper-class quot;Travel-agents quot;. HISTORY OF FRESHMAN GLEE . . . Willamette University x27;s unique tradition of Freshman Glee originated in 1908 with an idea of three ingenious freshmen. Jimmie Oaks, quot;Brick quot; Harrison, and R. V. Ellis challenged the other classes to a presentation of an original song for competition in Waller Chapel. In this first quot;College Glee quot; the freshmen won the victory banner. Since its conception, Glee has been moved from Waller Chapel, to the First Methodist Church, to the Salem Armory, and finally in 1923 to its present site in the then new Willamette gym. After the first simple Glees, more elaborate ones were planned, and in 1912, marching was added. In 1938 Life published quot;Freshman Glee quot;. Other colorful traditions have been added in the last thirty years. Four themes were adopted on a rotation basis: Novelty, Alma Mater, Fight, and Serenade. With the mounting competitive spirit, bets were made between classes, to be paid off on Blue Monday, and Freshman Glee closes with the losing class x27;s swim in the Mill Stream.
