Oct. 8/ 61 Camp Douglas Chicago Dear Mother I now am going to write a few lines to you I have just come from Kankakee I went down Thursday and came back Monday it was an accident that I got off I told the Capt that Hannah was sick and I must go to see her she paid my way and father paid it the other I had a good time I wrote that we was going To St. Louis but we will Not go far a little while yet We cant tell when we go Through Kankakee When we go the people are all Page 2 down to Kankakee and here to I took my things down to Kankakee and left them with Ed how does all the people down that way get a long how is Mary Amiee and Jennie Smith get along give my best respects to them tell them to write I must quit now I have a letter just come I must read it I have read it it is from one of the girls that lives down to farm ridge I have no more to write this time all well tele Mary Amiee to write when you write my best respects to her they are going to have a large fight in Missourre from J.
