Dedication This year x27;s dedication is a very special one, because we have chosen to dedicate Freshman Glee 1990 to four Willamette professors who are retiring this year. These professors have added a great deal to Willamette through their service, dedication and knowledge. Professor Chuck Bowles came to Willamette in 1965 as a professor of physical education and the head coach of the cross country team. He has also served as athletic director and chairman of the department. Professor Bowles pointed out that the greatest joy he has experienced at Willamette in the last 25 years is derived from his extensive interaction with the students. Professor Wright Cowger came to Willamette in 1969. He has taught many education courses and has been chairman of the English department several times. He is noted for having a positive, encouraging attitude and for giving 100 percent of his attention to both faculty and students. Professor Marta Velez began teaching at Willamette in 1971 as a part-time Spanish instructor. She later became a full-time associate professor of that language. She has been a great asset to both the foreign language department and the Willamette campus by being a wonderful, knowledgeable professor and chair of the department for three years. Her high expectations of her students have encouraged them to improve themselves and master the language. Professor Kent Markus began teaching history at Willamette in 1962. His experiences as a naval Captain and his traveling have added a great deal to his classes. Aside from being an outstanding professor for 28 years, Professor Markus has also been the head of the Faculty Affairs Committee. These four professors have taught for a combined 93 years. It is for their time and their service to the Willamette community that they are honored with the dedication for this year x27;s Freshman Glee. Ode To Willamette There x27;s an old historic temple rising grandly through the years, Where the oaken hearted fathers drew their strength for strong careers. Down the years, its portals open, Gathered wise ones to its fold. Breathed the spirit of the Westland, Card x27;nal emblem x27;bossed with gold. Dear old School How strong we love thee x27;Round thy mem x27;ries, how we cling Glad some hearts beneath thy shadow, loyal hearts to thee we bring. Old Willamette, how we cherish all thy legends and thy lore, Born upon the calm Pacific, Guides us onward ever more. Spirit of the Golden Westland, breathing through the fathers x27; tears, Tells the story of the temple, bids us hope a x27; down the years, Sing, oh, sing of dear Willamette, Sing while hearts are young and true, Sea to sea the chorus swelling, Dear Old School of our W.U. History Freshman Glee began in 1909 when the class of 1912 challenged the other classes in a song competition an event which became a tradition distinct to Willamette. In the past, Glee has been held in the Chapel of Waller Hall, the First Methodist Church, the Salem Armory, and the old Willamette Gymnasium (today x27;s Playhouse). Since 1975, Cone Field House has been used to accommodate the ever-popular Freshman Glee. Originally, Freshman Glee was a simple presentation of songs on a bare stage. Over the years, elaborate sets, marching and complex formations have also become essential parts of this special event. Freshman Glee is Willamette x27;s own tradition of the past, which will continue in the future. We Don x27;t Have to Say Goodbye by Mark Walker,Dave Bertholf, Michelle Shultz, Rob Patridge, Christ Robison, Bill Wilkerson Class of 1990 Standing on the bridge Watching the river flow away We long to join in leaving Yet for now, we hold our place. In us, you see the future But now, we x27;re thinking of the past Caught between our yesterdays And the promise of tomorrow Standing by the river Passing us by another day We x27;ve tested out the waters And grown from what we x27;ve gained We x27;ve learned to trust each other Now we x27;re ready to move on The time has come to break away We can no longer stay. Chorus: The time has come to say goodbye Capturing our memories We won x27;t forget the ties we x27;ve made They x27;ll keep us close throughout the years Although it x27;s time We don x27;t have to say goodbye Starting on our journey Current will carry us away Pushing away from shore We hold tight to our memories Bright visions of the future Clear the path arvead of us Our journey has begun today Now we are on our way Instrumental Bridge Chorus Don x27;t forget the child in Berlin, China or L.A. All are born the same then they x27;re given separate names And their lives begin to change Remember the child asking why walls separate Why must guns explode and why don x27;t people know it x27;s up to hope and not just fate Chorus: In twenty years time will we still ask why eager to know willing to try answers are here answers that bind works of our hands dreams in our minds This is a place we x27;ve all called home when we were young how could we have known where the winds of time would blow In twenty years remember twenty years ago Twenty Years by John Horton, Laura Zinniker Class of 1991 Don x27;t forget the light not out of reach, within sight sometimes in the dark we find truth, a burning spark to build afire in the night Remember the lives of ones who sought truth and now have died They are more than just a name now our minds have changed Truth make answers come alive Repeat Chorus Bridge: How can one small step of a child leap the walls that seem to stretch for miles? When we ask and answer and take action we will see walls are crumbled leaders humbled and humanity is freed Don x27;t forget the hands joined with hope in other lands Their dream to be free becomes reality How can we sit while they stand? Remember the ties that bind you here where home and world combine it x27;s when we join our hands we learn to understand we feel our Alma Mater pride Second Chorus: In twenty years time we will still ask why eager to know answers are here answers that bind work of our hands dreams in our minds This is a place we all call home we are still young how can we know where the winds of time will blow In twenty years we x27;ll remember Twenty Years Ago. Through the Years by Tim McFarland, Brian Peterson and Lyla Brown Class of 1992 A misty night, I walk alone Underneath a starry sky. The sidewalk washed in pale lamplight, As the millstream rushes by. A hidden violin calls me from the past, Out from the ancient, golden years. I hear the men who walked this path Their song echoes in my ear. Our great traditions are their legacy We sense their spirits near. They x27;ve left it all behind for me And now it won x27;t disappear. I wonder, were their dreams the same? Did they have all the same fears? The spirit stays although the faces change And it all begins right here. Chorus: Through the years, We can look back with joy And look forward to a bright new day. Through the years Our lives are gonna change But we still have yesterday. The chill in the air recalls darker days They were called away to fight. On distant shore, their banner raised and They fought for what was right. Their vision was a world at peace and Today that goal x27;s in sight. We think of them as the walls come down. We can almost see the light. (50s Bridge) With all the work that never ends It x27;s easy to ignore The hours that they must have spent Building what has gone before. My college days I x27;ll always miss But there x27;s a big world to explore Though I x27;m faced with many risks Like an eagle I must soar. Like an eagle I must soar. Repeat Chorus Three times Don x27;t Let Me Be A quot;Remember When x27; By Aaron Andre Miller and Jennifer Cain Class of 1993 Now as we start anew, Our dreams alive, our worries few, We must look back and see How we became to be. We live in the modern age Where vcr x27;s and cd x27;s are the rage. But do you remember a day When we did not live this way? Don x27;t let me be a picture on a page We x27;ve come too far in this age. Don x27;t let me be just a remember when, Not someone you think of now and then. Pull those annuals off the shelf Souveniers for all, help yourself. Dust them off, blow it all away, Because old memories are here to stay. Don x27;t let me be a picture on a page We x27;ve come too far in this age. Don x27;t let me be just a remember when, Not someone you think of now and then. Turn back the pages of history and you will find a guy named Lee. He was a father to Our old Willamette U. Hatfield, Packwood, Smith, and Sparks are just a few who x27;ve left their marks. We x27;ve marched for peace, we x27;ve gone to war we x27;ve fought for things worth dying for. And from carriages to classic cars to aeroplanes to fraternity bars. We x27;ve worn poodle-skirts and different dews, love beads, beenies, and bow-ties too. Take one look at us my friend before this day comes to an end. I ask you now, please remember me before our time turns to history. Time pushes on and on but memories linger strong. Some day we will realize, that these are the pages of our lives. Don x27;t let me be a picture on a page, we x27;ve come too far in this age. Don x27;t let me be just a remember when, just someone you think of now and then. Some friends, from the past may not last. Please don x27;t let us be quot;remember whens, quot; because we x27;ll be forever friends.
