Salem O. R. May 19th 1857 Bro. Waller I hope that you and other brethren will not expect me to remain here, after Conference. I have no idea that any thing will be done of any importance to improve the condition of the school for a long time. It is not possible to make an Institution worthy of the name, without a Library, apparatus funds. We have neither. In about ten years, I think we shall be ready to do what ought to have been done years ago, in the way of getting funds. A good agent ought to be sent into the field. It is no importance that he be a Methodist, or church member. Why cannot our Board of Trustees do something? Why not send a man out, why not? Other Institutions do it. We seem to think that in the course of time, somehow, or in some way, without any action or energy on our part, an Institution will grow up. I shall not wait another year. What other teachers may do I cannot tell. But there is no motive for me to wait. No time for study or improvement school room drudgery in abund-ance; all these by long continuance have become very irksome unendurable. I know that you are not to blame for this state of things. And that you cannot help it only unless you can stir men to action. But no good reason can be assigned why I more than any other man, should give my life to a Bd. Of Trustees or a school, if nothing is to be done, but at less than a snails pace. I have in short made up my mind, to seek employment elsewhere. There is nothing to stay here for. There is no material (not much) to work on and no good field of usefulness. And the pay is no better. I prefer to itinerate to doing this. So, you might as well look up a successor now as to delay awhile, and then do it. I had rather preach than stay here. A Female Seminary with complete arrangements is needed: A Boys (or Male) Seminary is needed independ-ent of each other the college, or meeting only as the recitation rooms. But it is of no use to tell what we need, when we cannot have any thing. How would Bro. Blair do? Yours Truly, F. S. Hoyt
