ODE TO WILLAMETTE There x27;s an old historic temple rising grandly through the years, Where the oaken hearted fathers drew their strength for strong careers; Down the years its portals open, gathered wise ones to its fold. Breathed the spirit of the Wesdand, card x27;nal emblem, x27;bossed with gold. Dear old School How strong we love thee, x27;round thy mem x27;ries how we cling Glad some hearts beneath thy shadow, loyal hearts to thee we bring. Old Willamette how we cherish all thy legends and thy lore, Born upon the calm Pacific, guides us onward ever more. Spirit of the Golden Wesdand, breathing through the fathers x27; tears, Tells the story of the temple, bids us hope a x27; down the years, Sing, oh, sing of dear Willamette, sing while hearts are young and true. Sea to sea the chorus swelling, dear Old School of our W.U. HISTORY Freshman Glee began in 1909 when the class of 1912 challenged the other classes in a song competition an event which became a tradition unique to Willamette. In the past, Glee has been held in the Chapel of Waller Hall, the First Methodist Church, the Salem Armory, and the old Willamette Gymnasium (today x27;s Playhouse). Since 1975, Cone Field House has been used to accommodate the ever popular Freshman Glee. Originally, Freshman Glee was a simple presentation of songs on a bare stage. Over the years, elaborate sets, marching and complex formations have also become essential parts of this special event. Freshman Glee is Willamette x27;s own tradition of the past, which will continue in the future. FIGHT FOR THEIR HOPE AND FAITH by Lila Anne Brawn, Class of 1992 We are all forced in the morning to rise and shine, and the lack of motivation blinds our eyes. They say that in this wide world there x27;s so much to live for But I guess as I x27;m getting older I don x27;t see it anymore. All the dreams that we made as children have faded away. All the goals and expectations were saved for other days. So now we look to the children to fulfill our dreams When we know that the quot;great quot; world ain x27;t what it seems (No it ain x27;t what it seems). But we have the hope that the fight will remain and we have the hope that our dreams will sustain for all those who came before us they still implore us to retain their hope and faith Yes we must fight for their hope and faith. All the trials and tribulations of our times help us to fight the self-limitations in our lives And we should all stand with each other strong and tall so that we can meet the challenge of hope for all (Yes we can have hope for all). And we have the hope that the fight will remain yes we have the hope that our dreams will sustain for all who came before us they still implore us to retain their hope and faith yes we must fight for their hope and keep the hope and faith keep the hope and faith keep the hope and faith And we have the hope that the fight will remain yes we have the hope that our dreams will sustain for all those who came before us they still implore us to retain their hope and faith Yes we must fight for their hope and faith (Amen) FRINDS EST ARMS by Aaron Andre Miller, Class of 1993 Turn back the pages to an ancient land and the blood-stained field where it all began Senseless is the age-old game of war, we catch our b reath and wonder why, what for. Look at us now, upon the winds of change we fly the wall has fallen and the hammer has crushed the scythe But across the sea contcmptment breeds disorder while the dying fight over invisible borders Chorus: Lay down your arms tonight and march into tomorrow righting our wrongs, erasing our sorrows and keeping the children safe from harm. Together, we must meet the challenge to be, To be Brothers in Arms. Conceived in liberty, for harmony we must fight, while King x27;s dream lives on, crosses still burn in the night. In the streets our homeless starve and children kill for colors we must stop this now and learn to love each other. Chorus: Lay down your arms tonight and march into tomorrow righting our wrongs, erasing our sorrows and keeping the children safe from harm. Together, we must meet the challenge to be, To be Sisters in Arms. Peace on earth, goodwill to men... All we arc saying is give peace a chance... We wrote down our dreams and capped them in a botde and threw it out to sea. We hear the cry (hear the cry). So can x27;t we try (can x27;t we try) to keep this dream alive? So when the waves leave the shore we do hope and pray you x27;ll find our SOS (SOS), in the sand (in the sand). Open it and realize our words are true, what x27;s done is done. So shine hope x27;s light across the sea. Together we hold the key. Through history Willamette has led the way, but a new challenge brings us here today. We must start a revolution to mend what x27;s wrong The time for change is with us, let the world hear our song. Chorus: Lay down your arms tonight and march into tomorrow righting our wrongs and erasing the sorrows and keeping the children safe from harm. Together we must meet this challenge to be, To be Friends in Arms THE SPIRIT OF WILLAMETTE By Kim Evered, Class of 1994 Willamette Bearcats push to get ahead, Reaching onward, past the common thread.
