The general impression is that the work( Chem wa deals exclusively with the present location of the Chemawa school, -b*rt- before going into history of the present location it might be wall for us to begin at the beginning which takes us back about 10 years before the school 'tt Chomawa wms, transferred from Forest Grove, Oregon --lt is found in the introduction of the Salem directory of 1871/and 1872, written by L. H. Judson and signed by his initials, these words: Thus year by year, slowly, yet surely, the little isolated settlement of hardy pioneers increased in wealth and numbers while the Mission settlement at Chemeketa, with its mills, and its farms at Chemewa, opposite to the place now- colled Wheatland, giving employment to many who, but for such an opportunity to earn the necessarys of life must have found much reater difficulty to improve a claim or make a settlement and was a nucleus around which were gathering the elements of an em- bry-o town which has grown to be the city of Salem, the capitol of the state of Oregon first in educational and political influence in this young and vigorous state. Its furm at Chemewa meant the original Tason Lee mission site, ofl course. The spelling of Mr. Judson of the name Chemawa was C-h-e-m-e-..-a t the time of the establishment of the school in 1885 and the place named Chemawa, Reverend J. L. Parrish said that it was appropriate, for it was not far from the original Chemawa, ce of the gravel on the river. The first Protestant Sunday School in the same territory was organized there, still in existence as the Sunday School of the first Methodist Church of Salem. Sufficient has been said to indicate the honorable and historically high setting of the name Chemawa. The question has been asked who named the place Chemai a? Dr. H. J . Minthorn, uncle to Ex- resident Herbert Hoover, is said to have given the name Chemawa.
