County of Klikatat Washington Territory S.S. of Klikat County in the Territory aforesaid being first duly Sworn does hereby depose and Say; that he was a resedent and Sheriff of Said County during the Winter of 1880 amp; 1881 and know of my own knowledge that the Said winter was one of almost unpre- cedented Severity; that the loss of Cattle throughout all Washington Territory North of the Columbia River and East of the Cascade Mountains was very great; that in Yakama County adjoining this a large proportion of the Cattle died in Consequence of the Severity of the Winter Said loss having been Estimated by Competent judges at from Sixty to Eighty per Cent of all the Cattle in Said County; that in a general way I have knowledge of the fact that the loss of Cattle on the Yakama Indian Reservation and though not personally Cognizant of the Exact Number, yet from the common Report at the time and my knowledge fo the very great loss of Cattle during Said winter in Said locality I verily believe the loss of cattle belonging to the United States in Said Yakama Reservation during the above Named winter to be from Sixty to Seventy over five per Cent. written sideways Copy of Affidavit Relating to Liss of Cattle by A. I have Carefully looked over the list of articles Reported Suspended in the Office of the 2d Auditor as Reported to Me by Agent Wilbur. viz 3 Axes, 60 Blankets, 15 pr Boots, 2 Neat Cattle, 20 lbs Candles, 21 Cups amp; Saucers, 64 lbs Coffee 46 yds Denims, 22 yds Jeans, 3 Kettles, 30 Knives amp; forks, 46 yds Linsey, 120 yds Cabot A. 6 Tin Plates. 24 Plates, 11 Pr pants, 9 Overalls, 1 Pail 72 yd Worsted Plaid, 50 lbs Rice, 478 lbs Sugar, 1 bbl Salmon, 12 Spoons, 16 yds Stripes amp; Plaid, 1 Pr Shoes, 37 Shirts, 3 gal Syrup, 1 lb Tea, amp; 26 yds Tweed. I further State that I was often present when such articles were Sold and Issued. to the Indians and tha I helped Agent Wilbur often in Making up his Quarterly papers, and was familiar with his dealing with the Indians; requiring work for the things Receved, and I verily believe the articles above mentioned were Sold to the Indians for labor on the Agency amp; Issued to the School and to the old and Needy Fragment G.B.
