Fort Simcoe W.T. May 21, 1869 Gen G.J. McKenny Supt. of Ind Affairs W.T. Sir: Something over one year ago I wrote you in reference to a Catholic priest who was cloistering himself away with the indians upon the reservation and exacting an influence (in my judgment.) much to their injury; and receved from you, instructions that relieved me for that time The Same priest has removed over the line of the Reservation and established a mission for the indians, where he is drawing drawing them off the Reservation Reserve, and keeping those who have never made their homes upon it off, according to the ability he has over them His establishment draws around him indians to Camp with their horses and cattle, and produces irritation with the whites and is giving me trouble. I herewith send you a Copy of a Communication received by me a few days ago from the Settlers around him James H. Wilbur Ind Agent Sir: Whereas there is a number of Indians Camped, and living on the Mission Claim, and having large bands of horses with a great many Stallions and other Stock that is a nuisance to the white settlers of the Valley. Therefore Resolved 1st That we earnestly ask you the Agent to move the indians and their stock on to the Reservation, and stop any further trouble Resolved 2d that if not removed, we will alter every stud that is found on our Side of the Creek. This Communication was Signed by all the Settlers of the Attanum Valley and vicinity indeed I do not know of but one exception, and he is a man that is living under the wings of the priest. There are twenty four names signed Finding there was a difficulty growing up between the whites and indians in Consequence of their being gathered from time to time by Said priest with their Stock, and having evidence from the most reliable indians upon the Reservation, and the white Settlers in the Attanum Valley, that Said priest was privately, and in Some instances publickly Saying and doing all he could to draw the indians away from the instructions I was giving them and finding from the indians that he was practicing Slight of hand, and gaining, if not gambling among them that he had Sent papers orders to the Gunsmith, Blacksmith amp; Physician of the Reserve to let the because(Indians) have a tools made, a guns, repaired, amp; medicine issued that he had in one instance, at least, sent an indian to the Gunsmith with a Pistol to be repaired under the declaration the pistol belonged to the indian when after words I found from a Communication from Said priest that Said pistol belonged to him, and the indian had no interest in it whatever Finding that he had been gathering up indian Stock that he had been keeping a Doctor and encouraging him to Come over upon the Reservation to doctor the indians and receive for his services the indian horses and believing most fully that his Counsels with, and meetings among, the indians were promotive of evil, and only evil, I wrote him a letter of which the following is a true copy Office Yakama Ind Reservation Fort Simcoe W.T. May 20th 1869 I have written you a lengthy letter that you might fully understand the case and give me Specific instructions The letter was taken to the priest by my Clerk and delivered to him in person. Now what Shall I do if he disregards the order given? An early answer is Solicited Yours truly James H. Wilbur U.S. Ind Agent W.T. Copy of a letter to Supt. McKenny in relation to the Catholic priest May 21st 1869.
