The Class of 1987 Proudly Presents The 76th Annual FRESHMAN GLEE 1984 FIGHT: AN ENDEAVOR OF HONOR Willamette University Dedication Freshman Glee of 1984 is dedicated with pride and enthusiasm to Daniel H. Schulze, a man who has devoted much energy to the academic excellence of Willamette. He came to Willamette as Professor of Bible and Religion. From 1935 to 1946 he held the position of Dean of Men, and from 1946 to his retirement in 1965 was Professor of German. Dr. Schulze was very involved in the tradition of Glee, and presented the Glee Banner for 12 years (1953-1965). Always having a smile and kind word, he was respected and loved by all who sought him for counsel. In his honor the Daniel H. Schulze Award was created by the class of 1965 to anually honor a member of the senior class and who exemplifies quot;the spirit of Freshman Glee, quot; and is considered quot;the best friend of the class. quot; 1984 HONORED GUESTS Daniel H. Glee has been held in the Chapel of Waller Hall, the First Methodist Church, the Salem Armory, and the old Willamette Gym (today x27;s Playhouse). Since 1975, Cone Field House has been used to accommodate the everpopular Glee. Freshman Glee was originally a simple presentation of songs on a bare stage. Over the years, elaborate sets, marching and complex formations have become essential parts of this special event. quot;Freshman Glee is, quot; according to the Wallulah of 1912, quot;an event belonging distinctly to Willamette. No other college in the Northwest, as far as known, no other college in the country has a similar contest. quot; JUDGES AND JUDGING Lyrics/Composition: Mrs. Glenda Blanchard, Mr. Gary Frame and Prof. Charles Heiden Vocal Rendition/Presentation: Prof. Maurice Brennen, Mr. Larry Brown, Miss Donna Cole and Mrs. Sharon Wallace Marching/Formation: Mrs. Gwen Crane, Col. Hugh Nelson and Miss Jo Anne Leddingham FRESHMAN GLEE is judged in three major categories: musical composition and lyrics, vocal rendition, and marching and formations. Musical composition and lyrics is based on originality, coordination, adaptibility to the Glee theme and overall impact of the song. Vocal rendition is judged on expression, tone quality and musicality. Marching and formations are judged on the basis of precision, originality and overall impact. Using an established point system, the judges award points for each of the three areas. The class accumulating the most points will be the winner of Freshman Glee, and the loser walks the millstream for more marching practice on Blue Monday. Here we are and we x27;re ready to win Here we are (Repeat) The Bearcat team is a fighting machine at Willamette At Willamette It just takes a few and the other team x27;s through at Willamette At Willamette We x27;ve got a lot of pride and nothing to hide At Willamette At Willamette We know we x27;re the best /cause we x27;ve passed the test at Willamette At Willamette CHORALE: We must pause just briefly to think about our past, To calculate just briefly, the time we x27;ve lost in class. Willamette is the sort of place where one tries to stay sane. With never ending homework along with constant rain. Willamette University, we want to thank you for our poverty. This is the time we x27;d like to say, we x27;ve enjoyed the therapy. We x27;ve got a year till we are through. The thought of ending makes us say to you, We x27;re a class that x27;s alive, We are the class of x27;85. HAIL TO WILLAMETTE By John Powell, Dean Radford, and Kathi Rice Class of 1986 Hail to Willamette It x27;s for her we fight the colors will call us and we x27;ll fight on through the night. REFRAIN Honor bound, duty found Our enemies will tremble for our might Hail to Willamette It x27;s for her we sing Our hearts filled with gladness When the bells of Eaton ring. Hail to Willamette It x27;s for her we love She warmly surrounds us all around and from above. Repeat Refrain Hail to Willamette It x27;s for her we live Our minds become much stronger As we learn how to give. Repeat Refrain Repeat refrain THE QUEST FOR HONOR By Sue Lundy and Brett Strobel Naomi Sugino and Brenda Kisor Class of 1987 In the age of old King Arthur With our swords raised skyward And the days of Guinevere, We will fight and defend. They, like we, were searching Identity we will gain, But the goal wasn x27;t clear. Our souls will not bend. Knights in shining armor, And when we find our following - The clash of swords in battle; Honor in its true form, A fight until death We x27;ll be true to ourselves In an endeavor of honor. And we x27;ll be reborn. A fight to the finish Now in modern times we x27;re searching Is the way many see. For the goal King Arthur sought. Is this what we want -- Could this be the meaning Do we think this is the key? Of the word our quest has brought? Have we looked at ourselves? Raise your swords in battle: Is this what we want to be? Fight to be yourself. Be who you are The way can be stormy In an endeavor of honor. Or the way can be fair. Wherever there x27;s darkness, The light x27;s always there. Is it the light that we want Or do we really care?
