Welcome to the 57th FRESHMAN GLEE at Willamette . . . Tonight the many weeks of preparation, the days of practice, and hours of anticipation come to a climax as the classes await the results of the judges. Glee is the greatest single event on the Willamette campus involving the students, the faculty and the administration. The spirit and enthusiasm aroused before Glee, reaching its height in settlement of Glee bets on Blue Monday, are indicative of the magnitude of the tradition. The theme quot;Alma Mater quot; has made us even more aware of our heritage at Willamette. I sincerely hope that you will join in the festive spirit which surrounds Glee and that Glee will be held with your fondest memories. Drink to the grand times To friends through the years A toast to the sad times Now mellowed by tears. Here x27;s to a place, to the night and to laughter To a time we x27;ll remember When autumn brings chill The years at Willamette The days warm with sun. Drink to them always And drink to them til The last friends departing And memories are still. Drink joy to Willamette and health to her friends Let x27;s stay long together let x27;s sing til the dawn Of trees in the winter, of rain in the wind All part of Willamette, a time that we knew A cheer though we x27;re parting, as ways lead us far. These thoughts reunite us, good days live again So drink to them always and drink to them til The last friends departing And memories are still. Don x27;t sorrow me my history, Gone days write a full full book, Of a Jason Soul that lived and grew and Looked to the trees and looked to the mountains. Don x27;t give me talk of pining ones, Over distant graves do mourn. Grab the future by its flaunting tail and Look to the clouds and look to the sun. Oh Jason Soul . . . Come talk to me . . . Thy spirit ever lives Come tell me of my history, And my old worn Waller Step, And my sunken quad where grass now grows, Where they dug up my brick, Where they dug up my brick. And tell me of my old mill stream Long ago fine wool did spin. And tell me of my mission school that Cast out the seed, that Cast out the seed. Your Waller Step, in its bowl holds the milk of Time. Your mission school, the seed that began to grow And the tree it grew And the tree it grew Asleep fathers Asleep fathers. My gone days are behind me now, Let them be a fertile bed, For a growing youth to break a bud, On the stem of a winding vine. Putnam and the Willamette University Drama Department HISTORY OF FRESHMAN GLEE . . . Freshman Glee was originated in 1908 through the work and ambitions of three freshmen, Jimmy Oaks, quot;Brick quot; Harrison, and R. V. Ellis. The freshman class of 1912 challenged the other three classes to an original song competition in Waller Hall. The victorious freshman class received the quot;College Glee quot; victory banner. In 1912, marching and formation were incorporated, furthering the basis for-competition. Also, in 1911, Freshman Glee was moved from Waller Hall to the First Methodist Church. Two years later it was presented in the Salem Armory, and finally in 1923, in the newly completed gym. The seniors in 1916 established the wearing of caps and gowns for Glee. Brighter dress colors were used in 1947, which restricted the formation. The fortieth Glee returned with the quot;Whiskerino quot; contest, seeing the traditional black and white glee uniforms. Glee enthusiasm has grown through the years with increased class participation. In the Silver Glee of 1933, the freshmen were the proud victors. They continued to win for the next three years, owing their fame to Helen Brenner, the remarkable composer of their glee songs. Willamette life gained further recognition when quot;Life quot; published an article on Glee in 1938. The Golden Glee of 1958 gave the seniors their third victory. The hours of preparation and anxiety are upon us today as the fifty-seventh Glee is presented. As our theme for this year x27;s Glee is Alma Mater, we are remembering the first year of Glee when participants presented Glee in Waller Hall.
