United States Indian Service Yakama Agency, January 20th, 1881 Rev James H. Wilbur US Indian Agent Washington DC My Dear Brother Very cold - snow about 1 foot, and been on now since before Dec. 1st - has enough to last 6 weeks yet, and probably over 2500 cattle being fed - no signs of a break up - many Indians will lose their all and for that matter many whiles outside the Res - Mr Miller returned from the Dalles last night, where he had been with Inspector Pollock, and also to telegraph you - found the lines all down, and everything demoralized - he left the telegram with Dickinson to forward - Pollock told Miller that speaking as a man; not as an officer he would bet that you never came back as Agent - That is doubtless their intention - But they don't realize that there be more that that are for us than against us they can't see that the mountains are full of chariots and horses of fire - As the mountains are round about jerusalem so the lord is round about them that fear Him - Our prayers - Indians and whites, are all the time going up for you - We will have to do something about beef soon - also must take some steps about wheat - Please send me instructions - We are killing now dry cows and 2 year olds almost altogether - Please look over the enclosed letter and sign it and have the blanks sent immediately - Don't be in any way discouraged or cast down - as I told Pollock, I no more believe they can hurt you, than I believe they can pluck down the heavens - The Eternal God is your refuge - I wrote you that the Census will show over 2000 Indians on the Reservation besides Puites - This knocks one of Pollocks props out - All well with Della Kuykendall and he improving - All send love to you and Mrs Wilbur Yours Truly J.H.
