CHANGING HORIZONS FRESHMAN GLEE WILLAMETTE UNIVERSITY The Class of 1983 proudly presents Freshman Glee 1980 The Seventy-Second Annual Freshman Glee Willamette University Sparks Center March 1, 1980 8:00 p.m. Welcome Good evening to all Tonight we join together for a fun and exciting event which will put the spirit of spring in the hearts of everyone here. This year, the Class of 1983 enthusiastically welcomes you to the Seventy-Second Annual Freshman Glee competition we know you are going to enjoy it The Freshman Class Dedication This year, Freshman Glee is dedicated to a sensitive, caring man who contributed his gifts, talents and friendship to Willamette for 55 years Lestle J. Sparks. Known to many as quot;Mr. Willamette, quot; quot;Les quot; Sparks attended the University from 1914 to 1919, graduating with a degree in chemistry. He began his teaching/coaching career at Willamette in 1925, continuing full-time until 1962. The concern and love Lestle showed for people throughout his life is surely to be respected, and a goal we should all strive to achieve. History Freshman Glee began in 1908 when three members of the freshman class decided to liven up the campus, challenging the other classes to a song competition on the bare stage of Waller Hall. Seventy-two years later Freshman Glee, now held in the modern Sparks Center, has grown to include marching formations and elaborate decorations. Willamette is proud to have kept alive this exciting tradition, and to have made it so much a part of the University. We haven x27;t time to look back, The future winds prevail. The sands of time left on the shore Are washed out by the sea. Just as you and I will be carried off By our ship called quot;Destiny. quot; Looking towards the horizon, I wonder what x27;s out there for me. A candle burns in the distance So far that I can barely see. Yet I know someday we x27;ll catch it; It x27;s not as far as it seems. We x27;ve got to reach for the stars. We x27;ve got to stretch for the sky, And follow the Path to our dreams. We hold fast to the rail. The ocean shows us her might. The wind whips against our faces: All eyes still stare upon the amber light. Yes, the candle still flickers in the distance. We know what we x27;re heading for: Our new life x27;s shore. The ocean is rough, our journey long. Through many hardships we x27;ll learn to be strong. And when our ship has landed, We x27;ll be on our way. Leaving with mem x27;ries of yesterday. quot;1 x27;Waller x27;s Story quot; Words and Music by Janet Swanson and Sue Widmer Well I x27;ve been here for over a century, and I x27;ve stood through all the foys and fears. I x27;ve seen so many changes and I won x27;t forget one maypole dance, one chapel, or one Glee bet. CHORUS Oh, some things change, but the real things they remain the same. The love they have for the times they x27;ve had, the many friends they x27;ve made. Glee gets x27;em all together once every year. To sing a song, share a smile, or even shed a tear. Good old times in Lausanne x27;s attic, sneakin x27; in the boys past ten. Smooching in quot;the star quot; behind the gold man x27;s back, feeding the ducks in the Mill Stream again. CHORUS Yes, there x27;s been some changes around this place. Coed dorms, all-campus kegs, a homecoming race. The old gym x27;s now the playhouse, old Gatke might be gone. Sparks supports the Bearcats, the Library x27;s movin x27; on. CHORUS FINALE Horizons are changing everywhere, but through all change around us we will always be the same. Waller x27;s story will stand against the sky. quot;Changing My Horizons quot; Words and Music by Paul Hammer With the way things have been going along, I x27;ve little time to waste. For fate has willed me not to achieve the goals I x27;ve had this day. Some of the places that I wanted to see, some things I wanted to do, Are no longer in my life x27;s plan, I x27;ll have to bid them adieu. Now I x27;ll set a new course, Change my ideals, Prepare for something new. CHORUS Now I x27;m changing my horizons, this is the way that it must be. I x27;ll follow this new course of mine till the end of eternity. There is no question in my mind, of what I must do now. My objective is to change, my horizons. Now the road ahed of me is a tough one I know, but my rewards will be great. x27;Cause with careful thought I have developed this plan, and I x27;m sure there x27;ll be no mistake. For my life will be better than it x27;s ever been before, my troubles will be few. With my new goals and a sound state of mind, I x27;ll no longer have to make do. Now I x27;ll set a new course, Change my ideals, Prepare for something new. CHORUS Like a bird who soars over islands, on a bright and clear day. My view of the world is changing with time, and it x27;s showed me a new way. Like that bird my heading is as clear as a bell, there is no haze to see through. But a goal such as this will prevail throughout my life, my journey will never be through. Now I x27;ll set a new course, Change my ideals, Prepare for something new.
