Washington D.C. January 31st 1881 Hon. E.C. Watkins. Sir, When you visited the Yakama Indian Agency Some years Since, you perhaps will Remember that an Employee said to you there was an error in reporting the Number of houses upon Said Agency, and you an General Howard in going over into the Simcoe Vally when where the Grist Mill is located, you Counted the houses, and afterwards, when wh General Howard was in the Carriage with us going down the Vally, you Counted the houses in Sight, and then told me what had been told you by the Employee, who Said there to you was only 86 houses and your Count from what you Saw made more than 100 in Sight. That question is up again and an effort is made to impeach my Veracity, and I write to get your Statement of Count at that time, if you Remember. Please do me the favor to answer at your Earliest Convenience and oblige a Friend. Yours truly, James H. Wilbur US Indian Agent Copy of a Letter To Col. E.C. Watkins. Rockford Mich
