In recognition of 29 years of warmhearted and conscientious service . . . we dedicate this, the Fifty- first Freshman Glee, to Dr. Daniel H. Schulze. Since coming to Willamette in 1930 to establish a religion department, Dr. Schulze has served the University as Dean of Men, general manager of the student body, and a professor of religion, Greek and German. His contact with students has gone beyond the normal limits, for as an ordained minister, Dr. Schulze has performed more than 100 marriage ceremonies for W. U. couples. His eager participation in Glee in presenting the banner for the past six years has added a note of quot;uniqueness quot; to the festivities and endeared him greatly to the students. Onward and Upward . . . with Freshman Glee As it enters its second fifty years, Glee, like the Centennial celebrating State of Oregon, opens one more chapter of its already bountiful history. This chapter is to be one of advancement and improvement, and as Oregon grows and progresses, so will Glee, becoming more steeped in tradition, spirit, and unifying bonds. PROGRAM . . . I adore the music and the bright, gay attitude Where sun lights all the world with glee. The wind is wailing and lonely, The rain keeps raining on me. These halls are empty still and cold. The South I must behold. I x27;m dreaming of the golden sunshine; Let me find the magic shore. Well I miss the crimson cross of Waller Drenched with winter x27;s rain. No, I x27;ll soon forget when troubles all grow smaller In the land of love and sugar cane. The night is dreary and slow. The lamplight flickers so low. I yearn for love and life and song. To the tropics I belong. I x27;m dreaming of the golden sunshine; Let me find the happy shore. Calypso Chorus: OF Papa Waller never took a cha cha chance, cha cha cha Latin romance it left him cold And dear old Jason never saw the natives dance but tropic rhythm is calling me. I gonna pack my bongos then go away. I want-a run far far from reality. The South will widen horizons in a liberal way. Keep me there to be eternally free, x27;ternally free. JUNIOR SONG . . CLASS OF 1960 WORDS - Chuck Foster, Ralph Litchfield MUSIC Sonja Peterson ARRANGED BY Barbara Dixon, Nancy Weeks, Pat Whelan SONG LEADER -Sonja Peterson FORMATION LEADER ..Ron Walker ACCOMPANISTS - Sonja Peterson, Pat Whelan HUMIDITY DITTY The desert sun and scorching sands Met the stalwart pioneers, Who for weeks and weeks saw nothing damp But their mingled sweat and tears. With swollen tongues and rasping throats They cried to heaven for rain, And you can bet that the Willamette Made their cries appear insane. For one day through a pass they went In the Cascade mountains high, And instead of sun in our Oregon Was a saturated sky. Refrain: Let every lad and every maiden Try his hand at heavy wadin x27;, For the year-long monsoon season has arrived. In this land of lakes and rivers, With its cold and with its shivers, We will see the tale of Noah x27;s ark revived. Heres x27; to you, Oh land of vigor, Where the clouds get ever bigger, And the rain dance gave the Indians all a pain. For like all the folk before us All our skins are good and porous, And we love the dear Willamette Valley rain. One hundred heavy years have passed Of saturation quotas; For nothing makes the spirit blue As much as H2O does. But students here, though cold and wet Cannot feel too dejected; For this is the stuff that made the mud that made the brick that made the hall that Papa Waller (spoken) erected. Those feet were pounding out a wonderful tale of the new state founded that day. This must be Oregon, the land is so fair; We x27;ll build us a bustling town; Red ruffled petticoats, a dusty old mare, A bright yellow calico gown. Tell those womenfolk they x27;ve got to cook and sew, Scrub and spin in the rustic bungalow. We have a great beginning waiting out there; Roll in with a hearty hello. Chorus: Roll out the buckboard, hitch up the roan; We x27;ve been a century building a home. Sing out the saga; strike up the song, We x27;ll be settling down before long. We had a restless feeling, yearning to move; We have an optimistic challenge to prove. Roll out the buckboard, hitch up the roan; We x27;re the sons of Old Oregon Hush, now, the evenin x27;s coming, brother, be still; It x27;s time we were settling down. We x27;ll settle Salem-city over the hill; Now picture that prosperous town. Dream great dreams and they x27;re bound to take you far; Stand up straight, set your eye upon a star. It won x27;t be long before we build us a mill; We won x27;t be wandering far. Our sons need educatin x27;, culture and fame Out West in our brand new state. Old Father Waller hitched his buggy and came, For he had a plan to relate. We cut logs and baked a half a million bricks, Used our heads and a hundred thrifty tricks. We have a place for learning Waller by name A case of good politics. Now just a century and seventeen more, The years bend the old board stairs. We x27;re getting educated, same as before, In answer to Old Waller x27;s prayers. Trees are whispering of the Oregon Trail; Paths are murmuring the old Willamette tale. The hallowed halls of Waller tell the tale of yore A great dream that just could not fail. FRESHMAN SONG . . . CLASS OF 1962 WORDS - - Marian Hauke MUSIC Dave Ackerman; Assisted by Pat Avery, Gary Frame SONG LEADER - Pat Avery FORMATION LEADER Ray Allen ACCOMPANISTS Dave Ackerman, Pat Avery ODE TO JASON We all know the tale of the Oregon story, How brave pioneers fought the Indians cruel, How Jason became such a man of great glory, When by the Mill Stream he started a school But where would we be if Jason and his mighty men Hadn x27;t fought those Indians, fought them o x27;er and o x27;er again? In the place of Waller there x27;d be tribes of Indian bands, And there would be teepees on the spot where Doney stands. For many years Jason Lee dreamed of giving A gift to the West which would some day have fame, Because he was strong, now his spirit is living Upon the campus, Willamette x27;s the name We would pass the time quot;Down by the old Mill Stream quot; x27;Stead of cheering for our team and singing x27;Tight, Bearcats, fight quot; That x27;s where we would be if Jason hadn x27;t built the school.. . Without Jason Lee we x27;d have no one to sing to, Without Jason Lee, no Willamette there x27;d be, In honor of him, now our voices will ring true, We x27;re praising Jason, oh Jason Lee Coda: Where, oh, where, oh, where would we be?
