Buffalo April 17th 1868 Dr N. Rounds, Dear Cousin. On arriving here last evening I found your letter awaiting me. I was very glad to hear from you, and the more so on account of the information you give concerning your absent children. I have not yet received any Dispatch from Oregon, but I am confidently one Expecting every day informing me of your election. I shall give you the earliest possible information so soon as the word reaches me. In answer to your inquiry concerning the crossing of the Isthmus I would say that through there may be some slight danger arising from heat sc yet I am satisfied that nothing in xxx is to be apprehended from that source. Of the immense number of person that cross the Isthmus now, there is not one in a thousand who is seriously effected by it, unless it is from the immordenate use of the unwholesome drinks and fruits which are constantly urged upon the traveler in making the transit. In crossing by the Railway there is no detention. The passangers are not on the Isthmus to exceed a half day; and it is the universal testimony of those who have crossed, that with care and prudence there is no particular danger either at that, on any other season of the year. This is my own judgement from from one crossing Though I was detained on the Nickaragua route four days. Tell your friends around Candor who may be inclined to accompany you that I am inclined to constitute myself a kind of Life i Insurance Company so far as the perrils of the trans t are concerned simply on the condition of entire abstinence from the miserable fruits and slops that abound on every hand. On leaving Candor I went to Binghamton New York and thence to Windsor New York . Had a pleasant visit with cousin Wm Returned to B. and then proceeded down to Rome New York . I had a very interesting time in Rome of which I will give you an account when I see you. Went from Rome to Utica, and thence to Steuben to see sister Gary. Returned to Utica. Spent the Sabbath with brethren Hartsbaugh and Ready. Had a severe attack of Neuralgia which disqualified me from to do any efficient service. Went from Utica to Cazenovia and attended the Oneida Conference. Left there on Tuesday morning, and Stopping one night at Rochester reached here last evening. Shall proceed to day to Norwalk Ohio, and thence to Lansing Michigan next Wednesday, and to Chicago so as to be there a day or two before General Conference begins. It gives me great pleasure to hear from you and I hope gratify me in this respect often while I am in the west. My respects to your family, with xxx of high regards from yourself. -Gustavus Hines
