| dc.description.abstract | Eco Echo is an eco-design practice, which explores the possibility of impact that can be made on the environment by graphic design using an upstream approach. This design practice is not limited by the idea of sustainability as pertaining only to consumers, but also recognizes the role of graphic designers as producers, who have influence over the process of production of goods. Design is seen not just as a visual process but as a powerful means of effecting sustainable changes both environmentally and culturally. The goal of this particular project is the need for sustainability within the world of design culture today. In most cases, sustainability is seen as an added bonus to the creative work that is done, instead of being considered as part of the whole process. In this case, Eco Echo challenges the notion by bringing attention to the problem of waste, overproduction, sourcing, and hidden environmental effects caused by design processes and manufacturing of products. The design of Eco Echo is minimalist and modern in style but is influenced organically with ideas derived from nature and its impact on the environment. In addition to that, the identity of the project itself incorporates the relationship between the people and the environment using such visual devices as typography and layouts, recycled materials and the symbolic combination of tree rings and fingerprints within the logo of the project. All those devices emphasize the main message of the project stating that any decision made creatively leaves its mark on the environment and industry. Eco Echo also focuses on sustainability in the context of business and professionalism. According to Eco Echo, sustainable design may bring great benefits and advantages to the businesses as it increases their credibility, helps to save materials and optimize manufacturing process, prepares them for upcoming challenges and changes concerning environmental issues. Eco Echo ultimately strives to inspire a future generation of designers to appreciate their power within the production and communication process. Through research, branding, experimentation with visuals, and practical applications, this thesis shows that design is not limited to aesthetics but can be used as a tool for environmental accountability, learning, and change. | |
