Abstract

This body of work explores the boundaries of my theoretical and artistic practice through the lens of exploring my own identity. I have taken the framework I proposed last semester- a body of work exploring translation through sets of three interconnected pieces- and used poetry as my textual inspiration. With each set beginning with a poem or poems that I feel a connection to, I am attempting to take that language and how I relate to it and translate that into personal visual expressions, via the modalities of painting, printmaking, and design. These modalities form the base of what I consider to be my multidisciplinary art practice, my fluency in each adding additional complexity to the others. As an artist, I am always making approximations in an effort to preserve the feeling or experience of the original, knowing that there can never be an exact translation of something in this way. In that approximation one begins to know the original better, through numerous comparisons and editing, the truth of both things can be revealed in the uncovering of their common meaning.
