the wallulah 1977 wca WILLAMETTE COMMUNICATIONS ASSOCIATION This is Wallulah, the daughter of Multonomah. the powerful chief of the Wallamets. The Wallamets were a tribe of Indians who lived in what is now known as Oregon 's Willamette Valley. Wallulah fell in love with Cecil Gray, a white missionary from the East. Although he loved her, he felt that he could not be true to his mission if he married her, so he gave her up. His work stirred up so much animosity among the Indians that he was finally condemned to death by a council of chiefs. However, legend has it that the Great Spirit saved him from this ordeal. The Wallamets believed in the fabled bridge of the Gods which spanned the Columbia River at a place which is now known as the Cascades. Troubles began to arise for the Wallamets, and at the same time , a volcanic disturbance arose, and the great bridge fell. This was taken as a. sign from the Gods that the power of the Wallamets was broken. Wallulah was given to a Cayuse Chieftain Snoqualmie --a man who Wallulah just hated! While he was taking her up the Columbia to his tribe, the canoe was capsized in the newly formed rapids of the Columbia. Wallulah drowned. Bring them forward. Remember their influence on you. They helped to build you into the person you are now. You confided in them. You laughed with them. You were hurt with them, or sometimes by them. Yet you are a part of them. Remember the all night cram sessions the drunken brawls, the brief and longer term relationships. Remember the influence. Bring it all back... It is a part of you. The year starts off with Rush, and the opportunity arises to see the Greek houses. visit new friends, and enjoy the parties. America's happy birthday for the 200th time has concluded, but the Bicentennial's end did not terminate the American people's distrust and disillusionment in government. The Bicentennial seemed best described as "the aftermath of Watergate". Watergate reappeared in the Woodward and Bernstein bestseller The Final Days, and a fresh scandal followed- The affair of U.S. Representative Wayne Hayes with his non-typing, tax-paid sex-atary Elizabeth Ray forced Hayes to resign. Also, Tongsun Park of Korea was reputed to be paying U.S. Congressmen for political favors. In China, the last of the great leaders died. Chairman Mao left a country in confusion and on the brink of a civil revolution. Earlier in the year, Premier Chou En-Lai died at age 82, and the two leaders reigning over one-fifth of the world's population were gone. It was another year of terrorism. 11 were killed in a baggage claim bombing at New York's La Guardia Airport. In Dublin, a bomb killed British Ambassador Christopher T.E. Ewart-Biggs. Orlando Letelier, a Chilean exile, was killed in a brutal bombing in Washing Washington ton D.C.. The nation of Syria hung three guerillas who seized a hotel. Israel refused to make serious negotiations with terrorists and managed to save 101 lives in a spectacular raid on Entebbe Airport in Uganda. The war of race moved to South Africa as "blacks" and "whites' clashed for power. In Angola. 13 mercenaries including one American were convicted of "war" crimes by a "people's" court and executed thereafter. Gary Mark Gilmore pleaded for permission to die in a Utah prison, as death penalty laws were questioned for their legality. Those who will be remembered in 1976 for their personal transition included: Howard Hughes, Rosalind Russell, Martha Mitchell, reputed Mafia leader Carlo Gambino, J. Paul Getty, Lee J. Cobb, Viscount Montgomery, and Agatha Christie. This was the year that was.1976. History now... Election--Simmy Carter, the first deep Southerner since the Civil War defeats Gerald Ford, the first non-elected President in U.S. History. Ford could not overcome many conservatives' lack of support due to bad feelings resulting from Ronald Reagan's loss at the Republican Convention. The Democrats, the majority party, were united. Jerry Brown, Governor of California, and Arizona Represent Representative ative Mo Udall could do little with a "Stop Carter" movement. Fritz Mondale and Robert Dole gave Americans a chance to take a look into the Vice Presidential candidates by debating on national television. Many thought it was a much better debate than the rather dull Ford- Carter debates. Eugene Me Carthy ran on the Independent ticket. Lester Maddox on the American Independent ticket, Margaret Wright on the Peace and Freedom ticket. Hoffan won again by starring in the tense Marathon Man. Paddy Chay- evsky's Network was a brilliant attack on commercial television. Sylvester Stalone had a knockout with Rocky. Stalone both wrote and starred in the prizewinning picture. Other American film highlights were: Taxi Driver. Next Stop Greenwich Village. Mel Brook's Silent Movie, and Neil Simon's Murder by Death.
