He worked for Rubenstein Furniture and other furniture stores; he was also part owner of photography shops in Salem. He played tenor saxophone and clarinet in the Big Band era, often performing at the Mellow Moon dance hall in West Salem. As a young man, he completed an advertising course in Portland but was generally a self-taught artist, completing correspondence courses and studying technique books.
