Chief Joseph's surrender to the U.S. army was made there on Oct. 5, 1887, after a lengthy series of battles that stretched across Oregon, Idaho and Montana. He and his small band of 350 Nez Perce were only 30 miles from their goal, the Canadian border, when they surrendered to a U.S. force of 2,000 cavalry and foot soldiers.
