Abstract

Description

While a student at the Museum Art School, Manuel Izquierdo began a series of animal bearers or shepherds-forward facing male figures with an animal slung over the shoulders. Izquierdo explored this subject for some thirty years, creating the last monumental version as a cast bronze installed outside the library at Pacific University in 1979. For Izquierdo, the theme of the shepherd held personal meaning: he titled one of these works Passage 1939, in reference to his shepherding of his younger brother and sister through war-torn Europe before they emigrated to the United States in 1942.
