Robert Aitken was born in San Francisco, where he studied at the Mark Hopkins Institute of Art. From 1904 to 1907 he studied in Paris. Aitken was a highly regarded sculptor of public monuments and statues in many American cities. One of his major works is the west pediment of the U.S. Supreme Court Building, Washington, D.C. In contrast, Mother and Child and Naiad, in the tradition of small-scale Renaissance figurines, are intended for intimate viewing and delectation by collectors and connoisseurs.
