Abstract
Description
Daubigny is considered to be one of the best of the Barbizon painters. John Canaday considers him to have been “the truest poet of the group.” Daubigny was the only Barbizon painter to work entirely en plein air or out of doors, devising a canopied rowboat as a floating studio. This scene, combining landscape, rural architecture, and a sense of direct observation, is characteristic of Daubigny’s broadly painted poetic realism.
