In addition to oil paintings on canvas or panel, Constance Fowler is also known for her watercolors on paper and for her wood and linoleum block prints. In the 1950s, her work in all media became increasingly fluid, at times showing an almost Surrealist freedom of line and shape as her style evolved in response to the free-wheeling post-war developments in American modern art. Path to the Beach is a composition of flowing shapes, while the watercolor of a covered bridge presents freely rendered lines, patches, and—in the clouds—overlapping washes of pigment that directly reflect the spontaneous process of watercolor painting.
