Description
Although art was taught at Willamette by Marie Craig and others beginning in the 19th century, Constance Fowler was hired by President Bruce Baxter in 1935 to establish the Art Department in its modern form. She taught art at Willamette until 1947, when she resigned to teach at Albion College in Michigan. Throughout her life as an artist she was attracted to the Oregon Coast, eventually retiring in Seal Rock. This view of the Heceta Head Lighthouse in Lane County is characteristic of her early work, which often dealt with the Oregon scene in turbulent, personally expressive terms.
