Rees John, born in St. Helens, Oregon, has lived in Salem for 50 years. He worked for Rubenstein Furniture and other furniture stores; he was also part owner of photography shops in Salem. He played tenor saxophone and clarinet in the Big Band era, often performing at the Mellow Moon dance hall in West Salem. As a young man, he completed an advertising course in Portland but was generally a self-taught artist, completing correspondence courses and studying technique books. Many of his paintings are of landscapes of the South Salem Hills are--often views from the property he has owned for much of his life in the Rees Hill Road area.
