Abstract

Description

This Klamath-Modoc woman's cap was probably purchased by Edwin Cross around 1900 in the Klamath Lakes region, and resembles a similarly patched cap in the photograph at left. Like Natalie Ball's quilted and painted textile assemblage, this cap combines diverse media; in this case, the elements are traditional tule fiber twining and beaded wool patches. While the original weaver's explanation was never recorded, this cap suggests a story of creative resilience to the pressures of time.
