Abstract
Description
Relief carvings of this type were used as ornamental panels on river barges. This panel represents a female personification of Hope, one of the three theological virtues and a popular figure in maritime contexts, serving as a reminder that early sea journeys were undertaken in a spirit of hopefulness. Hope is also typically shown with an anchor, an attribute that derives from Saint Paul who said of hope “it is like an anchor for our lives” (Hebrews 6:19).
