dc.descriptionMelville Wire was both an artist and a Methodist minister. Born in Austin, Illinois, he came to Oregon at the age of seven when his father was named pastor of the First Methodist Church in Salem. As a young boy, he took art lessons from Marie Craig at Willamette University and was a painter and etcher throughout his life. A graduate of Garrett Theological seminary in Evanston, Illinois, he was also a minister, serving a total of 61 years as a pastor of Methodist churches throughout Oregon.
