Blue Monday was added after Glee moved into the "old gyrntl in 1923. The high class spirit of the 1930's led to wagers between class presidents as to which class would emerge victorious in Glee, and these group bets were quickly transformed into the individual betting that is employed today. The song composition also changed somewhat in the late 1920's when a four-theme rotation was initiated. The themes of Alma Mater, Seranade, Fight Song, and Novelty were chosen. In the 1930's this was refined even more, and a subtheme or tlmottotl was added. In the late 1960's Glee carne very close to dying, along with so many other college traditions. A general revolt against traditions of the "older generation" caused many students to discard college traditions, from fraternities and sororities to homecoming and honor roles. It is a testimony to the strength and popularity of Glee that it survived. It did not emerge untouched, however, The traditional skirts and slacks were discarded in favor of jeans and matching t-shirts. The four-theme rotation was also discarded, and attendence and participation dropped dramatically. In the decade since then, Glee has regained its stature as a campus institution, and attendence and participation match that of its heyday in the 1950's. The four-theme rotation was reinstituted in 1981, when the theme of Novelty, "To the Future Through the Past" was chosen. Glee has also drawn the attention of local and national news media, earning feature status in the Statesman-Journal newspaper and headline status in the Oregonian. In 1937 the competition was broadcast over KOIN Radio and was regularly aired for several years. Many of Willamette's best known alumni were active participants, includi~ Oregon I s two' senators, Mark Hatfield and Robert Packwood. As a freshman in 1941, Sen. Hatfield was in charge of programs; he also ended up walking down the Mill Stream on Blue Monday as the class of '44 lost its first Freshman Glee. Glee is a tradition which carries on after graduation as well. Many alumni return each year to watch the newest installation of Glee, and each year the judges include alumni. Senator Hatfield has been a judge several times, as has Arno Denecke, former Chief Justice of the Oregon Supreme Court, and David Welch, a well-known composer and performer. Other judges have included many professor emeritus and friends of Willamette. Each spring, a challenge goes out from Willamette's Freshman class to the rest of the-student body. This is the official beginning of a week's activities that cUlminates in a night of class competition featuring original songs and marching formations. Each class is judged on their performance, the points are tallied, and on the following Monday, "Blue Monday", the losing class wades the length of the Mill Stream. Each class is responsible for composing a song that expresses some aspect of the Glee theme chosen for that year. Themes are decided on a rotation basis, and are chosen from Alma Mater, Serenade, Fight Song and Novelty. The class is then responsible for learning its song and creating marching formations that help express that song. Practices are limited to set times during the week prior to the Saturday night performance, to insure that no class gets an unfair advantage. On Saturday night, the classes gather in Sparks Center to present songs and formations before ·guest judges. Each class is judged on the words and music cf its song, formations, and overall presentation. The class receiving the most points is awarded the Glee Banner, and the losing class is sent to the Mill Stream on Blue Monday (to get more marching practice). Blue Monday is the day on which bets are paid off. During the week of practices preceeding Glee, members bet on the outcome 'of Saturday night. "Bets range from wearing odd.clothes to wearing signs proclaiming political or social preferences. There have been several streakers in past years, and although tarring and feathering have not been recent bets, shampoos with syrup or raw eggs in Cone Field House are. Glee History The first Freshman Glee was held in 1909, when three members of the entering class of 1908 challenged the upper classes to a contest of "wit and musical talent. II t The Freshmen, Jimmie" Oaks, "Brick" Harrison and R. V. Ellis thought an inter-class competition of original' college songs would be a way to raise class spirit and interest in Willamette. According to the 1912 edition of the Wallulah, "Freshman Glee is an event belonging distinctly to Willamette. No other college in the country has a similar contest. II Glee was originally held in the chapel of waller Hall. The performance then consisted of each class gathering in front of the assembly and performing its song. In 1911 Glee was moved from Waller to the First Methodist Church, and the next year the classes began marching in unison from their seats to the stage prior to singing their song. In 1913 the event had become so popular that it was forced to move again, this time l. to the Salem Armory. In 1932, Glee was brought back to campus and held in the Gymnasium, now the Playhouse. About that time the song presentation became more complicated as marching formations were added to MANAGER APPLICATION Curtis Acosta A-1Ol x3271 Erin Chatham E-288 x3299 Lupe' Chavez E-218 x6742 ~/Nate B-189 x6551 vTracy Prichard F-311 x3237 j/ Crayton Webb F-123 x6672 It was without hesitation that each member of our group was anxious to get involved and form a team. Now with genuine enthusiasm we submit our application for Overall Glee Managers. Our intent was to form a team with very diverse backgrounds, and qualifications that at the same time shared the drive and motivation to make Glee the best it can and the best it has ever been. Our goal is s ambitious: We want to carry the traditions of Glee out to their fullest extent while adding unprecedented and revolutionary ideas and enthusiasm. We believe that we have contacts, backgrounds and experience from both our time on campus as well as our previous years before col that will enable us to meet this goal~ Admittedly, our interest in Glee is not total unselfish; we each are excited to get to know as many students from all classes and as many administrators and faculty members that we possi can. Our hope is to take those new contacts and the many talents we will n as Overall Managers to further Willamette in our next three years. It is our desire to be a part of Willamette history and the Glee tradition in order to give back to the univers that has already given us so much. Curtis Acosta Box 101 x3271 Glee is a wonderful and unique part of Willamette University. To be a part of this exciting occasion would be both a challenge and an honor. From the first time that I heard about Glee I was anxious to become more involved, now I have an opportunity to help continue the great Glee tradition. Beyond these reasons I look forward to the involvement with people from different classes and to become closer to my own class. To conclude, I would like to help my group design a Glee that will balance the customs of the past with the energy of our ideas, making it the best Glee we can possibly have. L.Jebb More than anything or any event on the Willamette campus, the one thing that stands out to me as a symbol and says the most about the university is Glee. There is nothing that attracts me more to any than the element of tradition. In this case, the tradition of Glee anp the qualities of teamwork and unity it represents are things that I want to be a part of and take a leading role in. My ultimate is quite simply to make a difference. With my previous experience I believe that with my group, can continue the sacred traditions of Glee while adding something new to the process. I look at being an Overall Glee Manager as an opportunity of a lifetime; a chance to be challenged yet fulfilled. An opportuni to make a difference. Kroc Youth Achievement Award Willamette , Forensics Talent Award Proposed Division of Responsibilities After viewing the videotape from last year's Glee, asking many questions of people who had previously been invovled in Glee leadership and using our own innovation. we came up with six positions to ensure all our responsibilities would be met and all of our plans would be successful. These positions have been made only to denote one person who will be in charge of those repsponsibilites but every member of our group would be involved in all elements of Glee organization. There would be one person in each position: 1) Finances 2) Physical Set-up / Lights / Sound 3) Invitations / Publications 4) Administrative-Faculty Liaison / Schedul 5) Publicity / Scheduling 6) Guests I Honorarium I Judges Synopsis of New Ideas We have noted from the videotape and ions many things that have been done in the past. We would plan to continue those in addition to the fol ideas that to our knowledge are nal: 1) A Bar-B-Que dinner held during Glee week for all classes and Glee participants, student and attend. Also a celebration/reception after Glee for again, all classes and involved to attend. 2) We would like to put together an introductory packet including rules, schedules and any other information abouth this year's Glee to be distributed to all Glee 3) Extend invitations and use our contacts to have in attendance all elected officials from Oregon who attended and graduated or received an honorary degree from Willamette. From the Office ofStudent Activities WiUamette University To: From: Scott Greenwood Date: February 21, 1991 Re: TIU-A Partcipants in Freshman Glee After discussing the issue of TIU-A students participating in Glee several things have become clear to me, First, TIU-A student and Willamette students gain a great deal ofcultural understanding by working together on projects -Glee is a perfect opportunity for this. Secondly, the TIU-A students have in the past been very capable of learning the marching and singing requirements of Glee. Third, most ofGlee practice is "visual" rather than "oral" allowing the TIU-A students to learn by watching. Fourth. to "uninvite", or even suggest that TIU-A students not participate, would be both insensitive and inappropriate. Fifth, TID students have begun preparation, to ask them to add additional TIU-A students would not be a good idea In light of this and the discussion at the Glee Managers meeting on February 19, 1991 I would propose the following regarding TIU-A students participating in 1991 Glee: *An information packet regarding Glee be prepared in Japanese explaining what Glee is, how TID-A students may partcipate, and the time commitment involved. *TIU-A students be made aware that participation is voluntary. *That a sign-up occur at a TIU-A all student meeting indicating those interested in participating, and identifying which class they wish to participate with. *That those claJses which have a significant Japanese participation be allowed to add a class manager who will be primarily responsible for working with the TIU-A students in understanding the formations and songs. I would recommend that this person be somewhat proficient in Japanese. *That one or two practice times be allowed for those classes for Japanese students only to work on marching or song. *Buzz suggested that we might use a system whereby Japanese students participated based on the class standing of their roommate. I think we should discuss this. l From the Office ofStudent Activities Willamette University To: All Resident Directors From: Sallie Suby-Long, Director of Student Activities Scott Greenwood, Assistant Director of Student Activities Date: March 5, 1991 Re: Blue Monday It became apparent at the latest Resident Director staff meeting that a clarification of the Office of Student Activities stance on the use of alcohol during Glee Week and on Blue Monday was necessary. We would like to clearly state that we do not condone the use of alcohol during Glee Week or on Blue Monday. The following steps/actions have been taken in order to communicate this message to students: 1. A meeting was held with all Glee managers to communicate the message that the use of alcohol in Glee bets was to be strongly discouraged. At this meeting the Glee managers agreed to communicate this message to their classes. They were also notified that this year was being viewed as a test year and that the institution would be reviewing the results following Glee and that the possibility of hiring security to enforce University policies on Blue Monday still existed for next year. 2. The language of the memo which is sent to all CLA students was made stronger. The emphasis being placed on "all University policies being in effect" on Blue Monday and on discouraging the use of bets involving alcohol, further clarified this message for all students. We will attempt to work to further strengthen this message next year. 3. A meeting was held with the Senior skit planners to communicate the message that the University policies, including the use of alcohol, would be in place during skits. The Senior skit planners were very much in agreement with this and had already planned on addressing this issue with their class. 4. A problem still exists with students who do not participate in Glee. All Glee Managers present at the Glee meeting agreed that their classes would be informed about the rules and that this message would continue to be communicated through an all-campus memo to the rest of the community. The Office of Student Activities continues to work with ways in which to de-emphasize the part of alcohol in Glee. The responsibility for enforcing University policies continues to be a community-wide effort. Working in conjunction with Residence Life and Campus Safety, we believe that progress has been made in this area and will continue to be made in the future. After consulting with Sallie we believe that we improved the situation involving alcohol abuse during official Blue Monday activities last year and that we are on the right track to improving it again this year. We believe that the best way to handle this would be for me, in my normal capacity as Glee advisor to seriously address the issue of appropriateness of Glee bets at the next class manager meeting, and to encourage those class managers to discuss this at a designated practice. It is my belief that bringing evryone in might be viewed as more intrusive, and might actually backfire. Questions & Comments March 11, 1991 Nate Hopkins Box B-189 Dear Nate, Congratulations on a successful Glee! Your work with the finances, backdrop, and chairs was great. I know that all of those jobs were frustrating at some point but you handled them extremely well! In addition, your willingness to do wllatever was necessary during the last few hectic days was greatly appreciated. I really enjoyed working with you and I look forward to working with you in the future! Have a great Spring Break -you've earned it! Sincerely, Scott D. Greenwood Assistant Director of Student Activities March 11,1991 Erin Chatham Box E-288 Dear Erin, Congratulations on a job well done! I thought that you did an excellent job on the invitations, posters and programs. While I am aware of the frustrations you had dealing with News and Publications, the 'final products looked great! In addition, I appreciated, and congratulate you, for all the "little extras" that you worked on to make this years Glee a big success. I really enjoyed the opportunity to work with you, and look forward to working with you on other projects! Have a great Spring Break -you've earned it! Sincerely, Scott D. Greenwood Assistant Director of Student Activities March 11, 1991 Tracy Prichard Box F-311 Dear Tracy, Congratulations on a successful 1991 Glee. Your help in the preparation of the publicity and bet board details was an important part of making Glee the success it was! You should be pleased with the work that you put into helping out with the program -including the long hours in the final hectic days! Have a great Spring Break -you've earned it! Sincerely, Scott D. Greenwood Assistant Director of Student Activities March 11, 1991 Lupe Chavez Box E-218 Dear Lupe, Congratulations on the great job you did in coordinating the Glee practice schedule and the Banquet. Working f out the details on these two things is not the funnest job! These "less visible" jobs with"Glee are so very important for it to be successful. I appreciated the professional way you handled your responsibilities. Your work helped make Glee the success it was! Additionally, your willingness to help ih whatever ways were necessary during the final-hectic days was a huge help. I look forward to the opportunity to work with you again in the future! Have a great Spring Break -you've earned it! Sincerely, Scott D. Greenwood Assistant Director of Student Activities March 11,1991 Curtis Acosta Box A-101 Dear Curtis, Great job! Your hard work for the past 6 months has finally paid off. I appreciated your hard work and dedication in putting together the details of the physical arrangements. Getting the crew together for riser set-up, training the light people, and arranging the sound equipment was done superbly! You are a major reason that Glee 1991 was a success! I also appreciated the way you "picked up" the slack whenever it was needed. You performed your duties in an extremely professional manner. I really enjoyed working with you and I look forward to working with you in the future! Oh yes, how could I forget the chairs -they looked O.K. but the third row had one chair out of line! Have a great Spring Break -you've earned it! Sincerely, Scott D. Greenwood Assistant Director of Student Activities March 11, 1991 Crayton Webb Box F-123 Dear Crayton, Congratulations seems such a small word to express what a great job you did on Glee -but it is the best word I know of! You should be very pleased with the effort you put forth to make Glee a huge success. Your dedication to detail, your persistence in seeing a project through to the end, your leadership and your ability to keep a sense of humor (this list could go on) throughout the program are all qualities that served you well for Glee -and will serve you well in whatever else you choose to become involved in! As much as I hate to admit it, the slide show worked great -how could I have doubted you? Crayton, one of the side benefits of my job is that I get to work with great students like yourself! I look forward to working with you on future projects. Have a great Spring Break -you earned it!! Sincerely, Scott D. Greenwood Assistant Director of Student Activities March 11, 1991 Charlie Hill, Box H-144 Laura Zinniker, Box C-123 Dear Charlie, Laura and the Senior Skits Committee, Congratulations!!!!!! I can easily say that the Senior Skits were the funniest that I can remember. I appreciated the way you approached skits. I am not sure I have laughed so much in one evening in a long time (but then I don't get out much!)! The fact that you carefully monitored the alcohol policy, and that you were able to avoid any personal attacks on individual students is to be commended. in addition, your "stings" on faculty and staff were appropriate and well done. Please pass on my congratulations to all of those people connected to skits. Your class has set a new standard which needs to be followed! Congratulations!
