Description
Born in Rochester, New York, and trained at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Fontainebleau, France, Helen Blumenstiel worked as a magazine illustrator in New York in the 1930s. She came to Oregon in 1937 to teach at the Federal Art Center in Salem. In 1943, she purchased acreage in the Eola Hills and lived on a small homestead there until her death. She taught art at Linfield College in McMinnville in 1946, returning in 1952 to head the Linfield art department until 1965. A lover of nature and animals (she raised sheep on her farm), Blumenstiel is known for her landscape paintings and also for still life and figure studies.
