Like all students at the Museum Art School, Manuel Izquierdo was trained in painting, printmaking, drawing, composition, and sculpture. Though Izquierdo pursued sculpture and printmaking as his primary media, he was also a capable painter and often explored ideas and forms in more than one medium. The mother and child in this painting are similar in form to the terra cotta and later bronze sculptures that are also exhibited here.
