Abstract
Description
He Whakamaramatanga Artists Statement Pohokura was the name given to an ancient ancestor, a guardian of customary lore (tikanga) and the people of the land (tangata whenua). A manifestation of his be-ing can be seen in the tuatara, a reptile known to have existed for many eons and is still found in caves and forests in New Zealand. It is said to be a member of the dinosaur family. The three meeting houses (wharepuni) while representing some of my wife's tribal affiliations are symbolic of the three baskets of knowledge. It is said that Tane ascended into the twelveth heaven to procure the knowledge essential to ensuring that we as human beings (tangata) can live in harmony with our ancestors (tipuna) and the elements and environment that separate us. The stairway pattern (poutama) is symbolic of Tane's pathway to the heavens and represents the steps to enlightenment through attainment of knowledge and spirituality. 'E te tipuna whakatau mai ra hei whakaruruhau mo matou te kaupapa tangata' Ancient one may you continue to provide shelter and wisdom for us all.
