Flower Fire, painted during his early years on the Art Chool faculty, is charqacteristic of the Abstract Expressionism of the 1950's with its vigorous brushwork, heavy impasto, and vivid colors. It differs from the works that Johanson now is known for--paintings and prints of silhouetted figures and animals, Portland panoramas, and portraits of artists.
