Abstract

Description

The painting was inspired by the restoration of the steeple of Salem's First Methodist Church (located on State Street one block west of the Hallie Ford Museum). Commenting on the work at the end of this life, Hall stated: 'After the war, I was convinced that the only way to stop fighting was to reunite with Christ. The various ladders suggest there are different ways to get to Christ.' 'Ascension' was exhibited at the Macbeth Gallery in New York, in the Annual Exhibition of Contemporary American Painting at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York in 1952, and in the Artists of Oregon.
