Abstract
Description
The Klamath and Modoc are linguistically related groups whose southern Oregon and Northern California homelands span the region from the Klamath Marsh and the Upper and Lower Klamath Lakes to Tule and Clear Lakes. Their basketry arts rely on split tules, canes, and nettles, reflecting the lake and marsh environment. This particular basket is made using traditional Klamath-Modoc techniques and materials, yet its shape and design elements suggest the influence of Columbia River Plateau basketry traditions, thus providing evidence of aesthetic influences shared across a wide geographical area.
